Colonel Charles Waterhouse's description of this painting:

"...the subject of the retaking of a special forces camp that had been overrun in I Corps. A Marine unit ordered to retake it deploys across an open field; crosses a stream; helps each other out of the water; and the M60 sets up and fires a belt up hill. The gunner is the critical figure, and the other two figures are relegated to minor roles...a harmony of colors - purple, raw sienna, umbers, a touch of green, paynes gray, and unbleached titanium. With much of the color of the masonite panel showing through, the lightest light has to be the flash of the M60, with a few tempered secondary lights - but not enough to let the V.C. see him too clearl. The light shows through the receiver of the M60 which indicates this was the last shot."
