All the units which fought in and around Dai Do, Republic of South Vietnam, in late April and early May 1968, served with valor. It was, however, the incredible bravery and sacrifice of the Marines and corpsmen of 2d Bn, 4th Marines, going head to head against the 320th North Vietnamese Army Division, that stymied a major invasion of South Vietnam. Nearly 300 of 2/4's Marines were medevacked and 87 were killed. Many more were walking wounded. Two captains, James Livingston and Jay Vargas, were awarded the Medal of Honor, and the battalion commander, LtCol Bill Weise, the Navy Cross. Personally decorated or not, every one of those Marines and corpsmen performed magnificently in the Battle of Dai Do. Their trial by fire was as intense as any in the annals of our Corps, and they earned a permanent place in the front rank of those we will remember. Listen to their story - "Memories of Dai Do."
