The Marine Shop is located in the town of Quantico, Virginia, 25 miles south of the Washington, DC off of Interstate 95 at Exit 150. The Town of Quantico has shops and restaurants within easy walking distance of the mainside barracks. The Marine Shop, along with laundries, dry cleaning establishments and restaurants provide valuable commercial services for Marines and their families. The Marine Shop was founded in 1962 by the late Major Harry Elms, U.S. Marine Corps (Ret.) a logical outgrowth of his last active duty as the executive in charge of the Marine Corps' Uniform Board, the entity which evaluated and made recommendations to the Commandant of the Marine Corps for changes to the U.S. Marine uniform.

During his tenure, Major Elms was credited with setting the standard for retention of a plain, clean, conservative standard of dress as embodied by the uniform worn by male and female members of the Marine Corps today. He steadfastly recommended against following the trend of fashion, particularly in the size and width of lapels, neckwear and trouser design. He was quick, however, to evaluate and adopt the best of the characteristics incorporated into the many new fabrics that not only maintain but improve the appearance and comfort of the basic Marine uniform under all conditions of climate and wear. Until his death, Major Elms continued to be a source of expert knowledge to the Uniform Board and other members of the Marine Corps in the decision making process related to all aspects of male and female Marine uniforms, style, design, accessories and their accouterments.  For complete MCA history, please visit the Marine Corps Association website.
